Cuba Bound

I’m Going Back to Where it all Started.

I’m off to Cuba. I managed to cobble together a few assignments, including an opinion piece and something for Harpers. I’ll be in Cuba for 12 days (including my birthday!).

Watch this space for posting, although it won’t be easy while I am there.

This is my 26th visit to Cuba. I first went in 1991. I’ll be looking for sociopolitical cues and economic news. Street gossip and funny bits. Corruption and the secretive elite around the third generation of the Castro clan. There are hints of US diplomacy and smells of rotting garbage, I’ve got intros to 2 philosophers, a fashionista, a graffiti artist, and a popular influencer girl who just got out of jail for questioning the government. There is 1 hour of electricity a day and not much to eat. I’m carrying too much cash.

In other words, just like old times!
