Portland & the "Enemy Within"
I have deliberately held back from posting about current events in Portland. It is important that we do not take the bait: the administration is seeking confrontation, propaganda, and violence, and should be met with mocking laughter, silly costumes, and bacon-covered donuts. There is a real emergency happening, to our democracy and civic order, but one good response is this declaration of an “Emergency Naked Bike Ride” through the city. Keep America weird.
For now, heavy rains are tamping down protests, and as of today the Oregon National Guard has yet to actually deploy into the “war ravaged” Portland streets to fight the “enemy within.” Rumors are flying—yesterday it was “Today!” and today it is “Today!” and maybe tomorrow it will be tomorrow. For now we are living in (wet) peace.
A few points of reference for this struggle. It may get deadly serious, but so far humor is a brilliant response, and I am so proud that we made the big TV shows and have stirred up a shitstorm of civic pride.
