• Barton Gellman authored a much-discussed cover story for the Atlantic magazine, “January 6 was Practice.” Aside from warning that Trump will run in 2024, it offers a despairing portrait of one credulous Trump fanatic, and there is a good statistical analysis of the January 6 insurgents. Surprise, they are among the most spoiled rioters in history: older, wealthier, whiter, more than half professionals or business owners. And self-recruiting, mostly not in communication with the Proud Boys or any group. There is also new info on the way Trump’s war room orchestrated their attack. (Steve Bannon should go to jail.)

• Rolling Stone has this exposé on how Betsy DeVoss and three of the richest families in America fund radical rightwing extremism and insurrection. Remember, the DeVoss family makes much of its money by being at the very top of Amway, a pyramid scheme. A cleaning-products scam is paying for Trumpist propaganda.

* And two fun moments from the Wall Street Journal. In the first, Karl Rove asks, what if Democrats had done it? What if, after the 2016 election, they’d disputed everything, spread lies, and Antifa and BLM had violently stormed the capitol wearing tactical gear? Republicans would have gone medieval. Instead, they are < crickets. >
Speaking of denial, the second item is the WSJ crowing about the 27% rise in the stock market last year, in an article that never mentions the words “Joe Biden.” Of course not. They can’t give Democrats any credit.
