We have problems. But somehow they sound even worse in an English accent. The Guardian foreign editor Simon Tisdale says plainly what the shattering of our 80-year alliance with European democracies means. They are left “clinging to the wreckage” after our official change to greed, appeasement, and mafia tactics.
Trump is not merely reckless and stupid, but angry, impulsive, and addled. He is a “lying lunatic,” among other choice vocabulary. (More: “Lickspittle. Coward. Amoral bully.”). The implications for America are bad, and Tisdale spells out the self destruction we have created. But as usual we are inflicting even worse consequences on others:
The wider, negative ramifications of Trump’s infamy may take years to fully grasp. But its immediate import is plain. For Ukraine’s people, daily victims of Putin’s aggression, Trump is right up there with Brutus, Benedict Arnold, Vidkun Quisling and Lord Haw-Haw. Tens of thousands of civilians are dead or injured, millions are displaced and homeless. Now they are all Trump’s victims, too.
Reluctantly, I must say Thank You to Tisdale and other true friends who tell us what we need to hear.
